It’s been announced that the upcoming Ashen game will not support text and voice chat, but will instead offer other forms of communication. Developer Aurora44 recently disclosed to Official Xbox Magazine that:
We don’t have voice chat, or even text chat. We won’t even have user names- so when somebody’s playing in your game, you will have an array of gestures you can use, and you will have to use those to communicate.
This isn’t too dissimilar to how Dark Souls worked, which functioned pretty well, I might add. Ashen is an action RPG about a wanderer in search of a place to call home. There is no sun and the natural light that exists comes from eruptions that cover the land in ash. This is a world where nothing lasts, no matter how tightly you cling to it.
At its core, Ashen is about forging relationships. Players can choose to guide those they trust to their camp, encouraging them to rest at the fire and perhaps remain. People you meet out in the world will have unique skills and crafting abilities to bolster your chances of survival.
