Destroy All Humans 2 Reprobed Review

2 years ago, the team at THQ re-released the original Destroy All Humans! as a remaster, giving the original title graphical upgrades, newly improved UI, and bringing back everyone’s favorite extraterrestrial killing machine. This time around, we now have a remastered version of Destroy All Humans 2. As someone who preferred the sequel to the original, I went into the title with high hopes. It’s been years since I last played – it felt as if Destroy All Humans 2 Reprobed sent me back to 2006. Of course, this is a remastered version meaning that the core gameplay and mechanics are roughly the same. The question at hand is whether or not the game can be found enjoyable in 2022.

Destroy All Humans 2 Reprobed takes place in the 60s and begins picks back up with Crypto picking back where he left off with him successfully taking over the American government in the original game. This time around instead of destroying the human race, Crypto finds himself saving them from the Russians in order to thwart their plans to take over the world. Some may find it odd considering the title of the game, however, there is still plenty of killing and destruction to be had this time around. In terms of story content, it does have a lot to offer as there are a variety of different locations that players can visit and do missions in, making it more fleshed out than the original. The humor is somewhat of a hit or miss as sometimes it comes off plain goofy or the punchlines don’t stick. At times it can get annoying and makes you wish that it had a more serious take.

Throughout the game, players have the option to upgrade the different weapons that they unlock giving them more power, allowing them to hold more ammunition, and changing how they fire. Players are also given the option to upgrade their flying saucer as well giving it new abilities and protections. Unlike the original, even though it’s not a completely open world, you’re able to explore the different regions and find different collectibles without having to start up a mission. Speaking of missions, during them certain objective goals will be presented that can be completed to earn things such as upgrade tokens for your weapon and saucer, along with different outfits that Crypto can wear. Of course, there are also powers that Crypto has as well such as telekinesis, reading minds, distractions, and a couple of new ones that have been added in Reprobed. The main issue that I’ve had throughout my gameplay is that at times missions can be bugged preventing progress and I’d feel not all of my hits were registering when using powers like “Free Love”. Just as it was in the original, there is also a co-op mode in the game, but sadly it can only be played through couch co-op rather than online.

Visually, everything looks beautiful and full of color as you travel to locations such as Bay City and Albion. Compared to the original it’s a complete overhaul as everything appears to be brand new. The character models themselves appear to be detailed and give off a certain shine effect making them all stand out from one another. The only downside that I have had with the graphics is that it wouldn’t load in all the way at times making everything look like clay.

In terms of longevity, Destroy All Humans 2 Reprobed can be replayed multiple times as there are different goals for players to complete to unlock items, artwork, outfits, and music discs. With every mission either being an escort mission or a destroy this item here, it may be a tedious task, but for any completionists out there go crazy.

Conclusion

Destroy All Humans 2 Reprobed in my opinion is better than the original due to the fact that there is more for players to do as it has more variety. While the game takes a more goofy and playful tone to the whole “conquer the human race” trope, it still proves itself to be a fun experience that any player should try out.
